BILLY - INFANTRYMAN AIF FRANCE 1916

Naked Army’s ‘Billy’ cold cast bronze statue represents an Australian infantry private moving up to the front in France, 1916. Billy carries his Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) rifle and wears Pattern 1908 Mills webbing equipment. Billy has discarded his large pack, but retains his equipment in 'marching order'. His enlisted man's uniform and PH chemical gas hood are typical of the gear worn and carried at the time. Billy’s very recognisable slouch hat & ‘Aussie’ profile has made this a very popular sculpt. ‘The Naked Army’ was an expression used to describe Australian troops in WW1.
